Holman UMC Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

LOS ANGELES - Jan. 10, 2024 - PRLog -- Holman United Methodist Church kicks off its celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an interfaith prayer breakfast hosted by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Southern California. Speakers include Nirinjan Singh Khalsa, Executive Director of the California Sikh Council; Sherry L. Purcell, President of Immaculate Heart Community; Dafer M. Dakhil, Executive Director of the Omar ibn Al-Khattab Foundation; and Rev. Dr. Ken J. Walden, Senior Pastor of Holman and the morning's special honoree. The breakfast begins Thursday, January 11 at 8:00 a.m. in Holman's L. L. White Hall, 3320 W. Adams Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90018. Tickets are $25 per person or $250 per table. To reserve space, contact https://www.sclc-sc.org.

Later that day, Councilmember Heather Hutt and AFL-CIO President Yvonne Wheeler will lead a march on Adams Boulevard from 6th Avenue to Holman UMC. The walk, accompanied by music from the Holman choirs and community volunteers, commemorates the August 1968 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. A 1950s vintage city bus will travel along the route, recalling the yearlong Montgomery boycott sparked by a defiant Rosa Parks in 1955. The walk culminates in the parking lot of Holman United Methodist Church, where the stretch of Adams Boulevard from Crenshaw Boulevard to Arlington venue will be renamed Rev. James M. Lawson Mile.

Walk with us at 3:00 or join us, 4:00 p.m. at the church, for the formal dedication of Rev. James M. Lawson Mile, followed by a private screening of the Golden Globe nominated biopic Rustin. Attendance at the event is free, but registration is required. To register, visit https://revlawsonmile.eventbrite.com.
