Follow on Google News | Singer-songwriter Amelia Ray releases song dedicated to Broadway showtunesEach line in "Dream" references at least one musical, and is a delightful puzzle for showtune lovers.
By: Out of 3 Sigma "Dream" was inspired by a college acquaintance of Ray. "When I was at university in D.C. in the 90s, my group of friends and I often ran into a musical theatre major named Sarah at parties. We tried to avoid her because she couldn't hold a normal conversation. She always sang where other people spoke. It was annoying. We dubbed her 'Showtune Sarah'." Then a few months ago, Ray caught herself singing to trees and plants and animals and rolls of toilet paper in the grocery store. She thought, "Oh, dear. I've turned into Showtune Sarah!" Ray decided to write a song to the woman she had bullied 30 years prior. A woman who was simply speaking, er, singing her truth. While "Dream" is a tribute to musicals, it is also a recognition of Showtune Sarah's strength. "She never let us get to her, and if she did, it never showed. She just kept right on singing. Would that we all were so confident and comfortable in our own skin to let other people's opinions of us roll right off our back." "Dream" is now streaming on all platforms. A lyric video will be released on 15 January, and the answers to which 50 musicals are referenced in the song will follow soon after.
