In the 1930s, the majority of African-Americans living in St. Paul, MN, were centered in Rondo. It was an important hub of African-American life with thriving businesses, institutions, and organizations. The community valued the arts, culture, and education. It was a center for Black baseball and an important center for the advancement of civil rights. Their American dream was shattered when construction for the I-94 highway began in the late 1950s. The road was routed through the center of Rondo, forcing residents to evacuate One in every eight residents lost their home or business and many never recovered. However, the spirit of Rondo continues to live on in the present and through the Rondo: History & Values Anthology (https://www.ppgjli.org/ Statistics in 2020 revealed that 6.11 percent of U.S. literary artists are Black or African-American. There is a need for missing narratives and cultural preservation. The Rondo Anthology addresses those needs and brings to the forefront literary voices from within the Black community.
