Experience a Nam Ou Homestay in Laos with Bamboo Travel
By: Bamboo Travel
Travelling in the direction from Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang, the experience starts at the village of Pak Nga, to meet your guide, Kham, for a boat trip on the Nam Ou to the village of Ban Muang Soune which will be home for the next two days.
Upon arrival you will be greeted by the family and made to feel welcome in your private room in their beautiful wooden house.
Kham will explain the interesting history of the house, and there will be time to wander through the gardens or go for a swim.
In the late afternoon head out to explore the village where you will meet locals and pick-up some fresh ingredients at the small market. Back at the homestay you are welcome to help prepare dinner and learn about local cuisine.
Enjoy dinner with the family before turning in early as the locals do, and the following morning early risers can join Kham for an almsgiving ceremony at the local temple.
After breakfast with the family head out on the Nam Ou River with Kham and her uncle to learn some fishing techniques, and hike through the rice fields to see organic gardens of the rural farmers.
You will then bid farewell to Kham's family and travel south by road to Luang Prabang, via the Pak Ou Caves. To create a more active experience you can finish by kayaking down the Nam Ou and Mekong to Luang Prabang.
The homestay experience can be added to the 15-day Magic of the Mekong Itinerary, highlights of which include a stay in the alluring Muang La Lodge, a river cruise in Northern Laos, and exploring the highlights of the south.
The holiday can depart on any day between October and April (flights permitting) and costs from £4135 per person (two sharing). This includes flights, all transportation, 12 nights' B&B (plus 7 lunches and 4 dinners), activities/sightseeing and a guide.
The two-day Nam Ou Homestay experience costs an additional £295 per person to include all meals, accommodation and activities as detailed above.
