Starbucks (SBUX) union workers have called for a walkout on "Red Cup Day" coming Thursday, one of the chain's most important promotional events of the year.
QUARRY BAY, Hong Kong - Nov. 17, 2023 - PRLog -- Workers claimed the annual event, in which Starbucks gives away free, reusable, holiday-themed cups with coffee orders, may be one of the most difficult days of the year for workers due to an increase in order volumes.

Two of the workers' biggest complaints are low staffing numbers and unpredictable scheduling. Other key requests include more compensation and benefits, a safe and courteous workplace, and the freedom to organize.

Starbucks has allegedly stated that company is aware that union members are preparing a walkout and that the union has not agreed to meet to discuss in more than four months.

Starbucks employees went on strike for Red Cup Day last year, and the union is asking on customers and supporters to join them this year. According to the union's website, over 360 Starbucks locations are unionized, with over 9,000 union partners.

After the pandemic impacted businesses globally, the first countrywide strike at Starbucks is the latest move by workers to come together and maximize their negotiating power. According to a National Labor Relations Board research, union election petitions increased 58% from October 1 to June 1 of last year compared to the same period the previous year.
