Follow on Google News | Action Investments Limited: Meta Eyes Ad-Free Services to Meet EU RequirementsMeta Platforms (META) may soon provide ad-free subscription options for Facebook and Instagram to European customers in an effort to comply with European Union privacy requirements.
Meta was fined 390 million euros (approximately $411 million) in January 2023 for breaking the European Union's major privacy rule, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In May, Meta was fined another $1.3 billion for GDPR violations.2 The software giant has promised to contest both rulings. The suggested 10-euro plan would render an Instagram or Facebook membership more costly than a basic Netflix (NFLX) subscription (7.99 euros per month) and somewhat less expensive than ad-free Spotify Technology (SPOT) subscription, which costs 11 euros. YouTube, a subsidiary of Alphabet (GOOGL), costs 12 euros a month. However, due to app store fees levied by Google and Apple (AAPL), mobile app consumers may end up paying even more. With such costs, a Meta membership would cost roughly 13 euros per month, or 156 euros per year. Even at the lower cost proposed for Facebook and Instagram in Europe, a yearly subscription of 120 euros is not inexpensive. However, subscription revenue may not be the primary purpose of the organization. Instead, Meta appears to be wagering that most consumers will stick with the unpaid, ad-supported experience they're used to, letting the company to continue employing targeted advertisements while remaining compliant with Eurozone legislation.
