By: The Crime Report A California man who was tried and jailed for 19 months for the 1987 murder of a 6-year-old boy in Solano County has been exonerated thanks to DNA evidence that led to the arrest of another suspect, Noah Goldberg reports for the Los Angeles Times. Shawn Quincy Melton, who died in 2000, was labeled a suspect by police after he provided information about the killing and sexual assault of Jeremy Stoner that they said only the killer could know. In 1987, Melton was interrogated for 30 hours, after which time authorities' determined that he had multiple personalities and that his alter ego "John Wolf" actually killed Stoner. Melton denied the allegations, even passing a polygraph test, but eventually broke and changed his story to suit the police's narrative. However, while police claimed that they were 100 percent certain of his guilt, Melton's two trials resulted in hung juries and he never went to prison for the crime. Despite charges being dismissed, police maintained that Melton was their prime suspect, and even questioned him, for years after. On September 18, 2023, authorities arrested Oregon resident Fred Cain III, 69, for the murder. Cain will be transferred to and tried in California. Shawn Quincy Melton Born on 29th of July 1961. Died on 14th of June in 2000 AD. Buried in Lodi, California, USA. http://youtu.be/ This story was originally published on The Crime Report: https://thecrimereport.org/ End
