Rainforest Automation and Ameren to validate 'EV Discovery' technology

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Aug. 21, 2023 - PRLog -- Rainforest Automation, an energy management software company, and Ameren, a Fortune 500 energy utility, announced the start of a technology test project to demonstrate the efficacy of using algorithmic disaggregation analytics to locate electric vehicle (EV) charging sessions using existing utility meter data. The project will also test Rainforest's managed EV charging platform to measure and control charging sessions using vehicle telematics.

Rainforest was selected as one of 16 early-stage global companies in EPRI's Incubatenergy Labs 2023 cohort to collaborate with energy providers and EPRI subject matter experts to demonstrate their innovative technology in a pilot project. The program showcases emerging companies advancing electrification, decarbonization, and grid modernization.

Ameren will collaborate with Rainforest to analyze a sub-set of its existing smart meter usage data to determine if it can be used to find where and when EVs are being charged by Ameren customers in Missouri. This information will then be used to invite select Ameren Missouri customers to trial Rainforest's managed EV charging platform.

Utilities are facing increasing demand on their distribution networks due to the adoption of EVs. The technology being demonstrated in this project may help utilities identify higher concentrations of EVs without deploying any equipment using data they already have. The Rainforest platform will use this data to test how to best manage EV charging so that it can be beneficial to the grid.

Ameren Missouri customers found to be EV owners will be recruited to trial Rainforest's managed EV charging platform. The platform unburdens users from worrying about when to charge their car while empowering them with an engaging mobile app with real-time information and control. It prioritizes user needs while accommodating the needs of the utility to regulate demand on the grid.

The data gathered directly from the EVs during the managed charging stage of the project will be used to validate the accuracy of charging sessions detected by analysis of the meter usage data. Rainforest will present the project results at the Incubatenergy Labs Demo Day event on November 1, 2023, in Vancouver, BC.
