ST. PAUL, Minn. - June 21, 2023 - PRLog -- The non-profit Planting People Growing Justice™ Leadership Institute (PPGJLI) is seeking entries for a new writing competition. Winning entries will be featured in the organization's "STEM Anthology."

"We're are excited to announce our STEM youth anthology," said PPGJLI founder, Dr. Artika Tyner.

The writing competition is being conducted in partnership with The Science Museum of Minnesota and The Donaldson Foundation. The competition's theme is: How Can STEM Change the World? A rolling deadline has been set. Writers can submit their entries of 1,000 words or less online.

The competition is open to youths in grades 3-12 who are living in Minnesota. Entries can be submitted in the form of fiction or creative fiction, poetry or prose. Youths can visit the entry website for prompts. Twenty-five winners will be selected to have their entries published in the anthology. They'll receive $50 and a copy of the book when it's published.

Individuals trained in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields are in high demand, but diversity in those disciplines is declining rapidly. Many in the BIPOC community feel that a STEM career is out of their reach. According to a 2021 report by the Pew Research Center, only 9 percent of all STEM jobs are held by African Americans, while Hispanics make up 8 percent and Asians represent 13 percent.

STEM skills are essential in society. They help provide leadership tools for innovation and have been the impetus for some of society's greatest accomplishments and advances. The "STEM Anthology" is designed to inspire youths, spark their interest, and create curiosity in STEM fields.

Youths can use their future training and knowledge to arrive at solutions for some of the most important challenges facing people in modern times such as healthcare inequality and protecting the planet. The writing competition encourages youth to develop leadership skills and strategies at an early age.

The writing competition for the "STEM Anthology" (www.ppgjli.org/stem-2023) conducted by PPGJLI is a unique opportunity for young writers. It offers a path for youths to see and explore the many ways that STEM is obvious in the everyday world and that careers in those fields are available to them.
