By: Shore Scripts Mujica is a Cuban-American writer, director, and Emmy-winning producer from Hialeah, Florida. His short film Dreamer was an Imagen Award finalist (noted for its social commentary on racial identity) and named one of Vulture's Best Comedy Videos of 2018, while Uno Por Uno: The Cuban Missile Crisis won Best Short at HBO's NYLFF (2019) and Cine Sony's "New Voices" (2019). He has been staffed on shows for NBC, Peacock, and HBO Max. Loco is a surrealist dark comedy "based on a true story of false thoughts" about mental health stigma in the Latinx community. Mujica's goal with the film is to destigmatize a very real and relatable issue by showing what it's like to go through your day on the brink of a breakdown while trying to hide it from friends and family in a culture that doesn't talk about it. The grant's prize package also includes industry guidance from two-time Oscar-nominated producer, Maria Gracia Turgeon, camera equipment rental provided by ARRI Rental, and ongoing production and distribution support from Shore Scripts. The 2nd Place Prize of $1,000 cash was awarded to S.J. Thompson & Hayes Hart-Thompson for free martin. The Fund awards prizes for 15 Finalists and accepts short scripts, proofs-of-concept, and submissions from short films seeking finishing funds. Shore Scripts' first Short Film Fund grant was awarded in 2016 for Salam, written and directed by Claire Fowler, which premiered at Tribeca in 2018 and went on to win a BAFTA Cymru in 2020. Recent alumni include Brendan Beachman for A Wedding Day, which won the Audience Award for Best International Short at the Calgary Underground Film Festival earlier this year; Alexandra Qin for Thirstygirl, which will be premiering at Provincetown International Film Festival later this month; and Joseph Lee for Other Homes, which screened at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival in May. Shore Scripts was founded in 2012 by producer David Beazley with the goal of connecting emerging writers with the film and television industry and providing much-needed support as they advance their careers. Since the inception of the Short Film Fund, Shore Scripts has greenlit 18 commissioned short films. Production funding is currently awarded twice a year. End
