Follow on Google News | Central Florida Collaboration Helps Animals in CrisisInnovative training effort, made possible by the ASPCA, helps organizations network together for a common cause.
By: RVR Horse Rescue Thanks to a generous grant from the ASPCA, eighteen attendees were trained, with representation from RVR Horse Rescue, Florida State Animal Response Coalition, Florida Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Lakeland Fire, Polk County Fire, Hillsborough County Fire, and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Agriculture Unit. The class was led by Brandi Phillips, Animal Technical Rescue Branch Director of the University of Florida Veterinary Emergency Treatment Service. Co-instructors were Karl Froling and Jason Diaz. The three-day course took place at both RVR Horse Rescue, in Plant City, and at the Greater Hillsborough County Fairgrounds. The group practiced rescuing a downed horse mannequin from various real-life scenarios, such as being stuck in a hole and having fallen in a trailer and in a stall. The mannequin used is Jinx, a full-sized and full-weight mechanical horse dummy. Both Jinx and the Häst Bipod that were used to lift him were previously purchased with another ASPCA grant. "We're excited to collaborate with amazing local animal advocates to offer more help for animals in crisis", said Shawn Jayroe, RVR Horse Rescue Founder, Owner, and President.
