LITCHFIELD, Conn. - March 31, 2023 - PRLog -- Beginning April 1st, Wisdom House Retreat & Conference Center at 229 East Litchfield Road in Litchfield is welcoming mixed mediums artists Timothy McDowell and Joseph Smolinski in an exhibition entitled "By Water, Air & Fire: Artists Explore Environmental Issues". Their works are featured in Wisdom House's Marie Louise Trichet Gallery where a free Artists' Reception and Talk will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Saturday, April 22nd.

Artist McDowell's works will include large-format prints of toned cyanotypes with mixed mediums on Japanese Kozo paper and cyanotype with oil paint on linen. Invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, astronomer and scientist, cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces prints in a distinctive dark greenish blue.

McDowell stated, "As a visual artist, I conceive myself as a catalyst for ever-changing realities prompted by compelling contemporary issues fused with cultural memories and realized through explorative processes. My work is my interpretation of current themes through a new visual vocabulary originating from a dialogue between painting and photography."

Mr. McDowell's collections have been in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Prints and Drawings Collection; The University of Iowa Art Museum; The New Mexico Museum of Art; Tucson Museum of Art; and Florence Griswold Museum.

Joseph Smolinski is a multidisciplinary artist and educator. His practice questions the shifting roles of technology within communication networks, energy, and oil companies, and the industrial agricultural infrastructure, which indelibly shape the so-called natural environment.

"My work," explained Smolinski," examines technology in our changing landscape. This has led me to investigate communication networks, energy, and oil companies, and the industrial agriculture infrastructure, and how these industries shape our natural environment and physically shape our planet."

Artist Smolinski's creations have been in group exhibitions at MASS MoCA; Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art; and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art.

Wisdom House is an interfaith retreat and conference center presenting programs in spirituality, wellness, the arts, and ecology, and offering hospitality to academic, civic, nonprofit, and business organizations. "We are committed to sustainability, justice, and welcoming people of all backgrounds and beliefs," stated executive director Deborah Kelly. "We are excited to feature environmentally focused programs and exhibitions that are open to the public throughout 2023."

The free Artists' Talk and Reception on Saturday, April 22 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM will allow attendees to talk with Mr. McDowell and Mr. Smolinski while viewing their notable artworks.

The "By Water, Air & Fire: Artists Explore Environmental Issues" exhibit can be viewed at Wisdom House through May 19, 2023, on weekdays from 9 AM to 4 PM, and Saturdays by appointment which can be scheduled by calling Wisdom House on weekdays at 860-567-3163.
