Follow on Google News | Five organ transplants at the same time, KIM'S HEALTH creates historyBy: Transplant India The historical event occurred at KIMS Health in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The transplantation was done by simultaneously collecting organs from a brain-dead person to three others. The donor was a 24-year-old Tamil Nadu patient who was brain dead after an accident. His kidneys, pancreas, and liver were transplanted to a 26-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man. A portion of the liver and kidney was received by one. While the pancreas, along with another kidney, was given to the other. A 50-year-old woman with liver disease acquired the remaining part of the liver. The whole procedure continued for 24 hours with the participation of 100 health professionals. This is also the first time pancreas was transplanted in a hospital in South Kerala. The operation underwent under the supervision of K-SOTTO, facilitating constant organ and tissue transplantation in India. Dr. Noble Gracious, the Executive Director of K-SOTTO, said, "The organ-donation criteria implemented by the Government is meant for the patients who need help with multi-organ failures. All the national and international guidelines are followed, and the gesture of the donor's family is equally respected". It was the first time a split liver transplant was done in Kerala. A patient who has Type-1 diabetes with dysfunctional kidneys received a pancreas and a kidney.
