Eastern Brooklyn's District 19 scholars hit the big screen in the unveiling of documentary honoring Black historical figures

Brooklyn, NY - Monday, February 27th marks the premiere of My VOICE, My POWER, OUR VOICE: The POWER of Oration. This original District 19 documentary showcases the works of scholars from the district's 36 schools across East New York, Starrett City/Spring Creek, and Cypress Hills. Expressions of the students' appreciation for Black heroes manifested through a collection of speeches, monologues, and performances was adapted into an on-screen documentary. Finally, the film will be unveiled in a private screening for District 19 families, elected officials, educators, community stakeholders, and media.

"This year District 19 scholars are unlocking the power of their voice to make a difference by honoring and learning about Black orators who unequivocally inspired us to fight for freedom, demand civil rights, and beyond," says Dr. Tamra Collins, District 19 Superintendent.

The invitation-only screening, hosted by Showcase Cinemas' Linden Blvd Multiplex Cinemas, will take place on Monday, February 27th, with the red carpet beginning at 5 pm and the screening starting at 6 pm sharp. The theater is located at 2784 Linden Blvd. Brooklyn, NY 11208. District leaders hope that this production and the premiering of this film serve as a testament to the power of sharing Black stories and the importance of being educated about them. Under the leadership of Dr. Collins, District 19 continues its commitment to providing opportunities for its students to express themselves and showcase their talents.

Dr. Collins went on to say, "As we celebrate Black History Month, we appreciate the eloquent and passionate words that played a powerful role in the fight for equal rights and that continue to impact our nation. It is important for our scholars to understand that they, too, can lift up their voices to be the change they want to see. I'm so proud of them for this accomplishment."
