The play In A Sleep of Prisoners, Christopher Fry investigates dramatically the problems of four prisoners of war. Locked up in a church in enemy territory, the men find that both personal and general conflicts become more explosive in confinement. One shell-shocked soldier loses his temper and nearly strangles his friend. In succeeding dreams over the course of a night, each prisoner reveals his inner response to the events, engaging himself, his companions and the problems they face onto a spiritual plane. Their immediate surroundings suggest Old Testament protagonists to the dreamers, and the attempted assault from their waking lives is seen successively in the stories of Cain and Abel, David and Absalom, and Abraham and Isaac. In the fourth dream, their redemption is exemplified by the meeting with the fourth man in the fire, reflected in the story of Shadrac, Meshac, and Abednego. The play develops themes Mr. Fry has dealt with successfully in The Firstborn and The Boy with a Cart. The main interest here is incisive exploration into how men see themselves, each other, and the struggle to find meaning and progress in the world. Followers of this playwright's work will be glad to find that the poetic lyricism, humor and craftsmanship which have been noted in The Lady's Not For Burning and Venus Observed are not lacking here. [from front flap] About Worldstage Theatre presents their inaugural play in their new home in Pasadena.
