Follow on Google News | Rock Guitar Virtuoso Reveals New Tapping Technique TutorialTom Hess shows guitar players how to use great tapping technique.
Hess says: "I loved the amazing tapping licks of great players like Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads and Steve Vai. When I was younger, I wanted to play guitar tapping licks just like them, but I was very sloppy and couldn't figure out how to do it. It wasn't until I found a guitar teacher in my local area that I finally began to master the technique." Hess's tutorial includes many video clips and detailed explanations of various guitar tapping approaches that combine different ideas in creative ways. For example: He discusses using tapping together with sweep picking and cites his long-time student Mike Philippov in a video demonstration. Hess says: "It's actually not as hard as you might think to combine sweep picking together with tapping. For one, keeping your hand near the neck pickup helps you reach notes faster and stay in time rhythmically. Staying in time rhythmically is key to making this combination of techniques sound smooth and awesome." Hess includes a tab of the sweep picking tapping lick in his online resource as well. Other topics he discusses include: Tapped harmonics – The concept of playing harmonics over the fretboard using tapping. And: Tapped vibrato – The idea of applying vibrato using the finger you tap with in combination with the fretting hand (used to apply the needed pressure for the vibrato to work). All of these combinations are generally not used by most guitar players, making them unique applications of tapping technique.
