FMC's Youth Voice program launched in 2016 as a passion project led by staff reporters and became a full-fledged program just before the start of the pandemic. The Youth Voice team worked with Los Angeles-based graphic designer Christine Ongjoco to develop the name and an energetic, fresh color palette and graphics that capture the program's aspirations and the energy of the young adults it serves. The media training program offers young people with experience in foster care, the justice system, or homelessness opportunities to share their perspectives with individuals who often have influence over the systems that have impacted their lives. By offering workshops, contests, mentoring and live events, youth learn journalism, editing and speaking skills to professionalize their voices, and develop a portfolio that they can use in pursuing a career. To date over 400 op-eds, personal narratives and poems have been published by Youth Voice writers on The Imprint, FMC's daily news website focused on children, youth and families, as well as in Fostering Families Today magazine. The Dec. 8 event is free, and is open to current and former foster youth as well as anyone who works in or adjacent to the youth services field. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and share feedback during the one-hour session.
