New course record set at sold out annual Jail Break 5K in St. Augustine, Florida

History was made during the annual Jail Break 5K on Saturday, October 22, when the first runner crossed the finish line breaking all previous course records.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Nov. 14, 2022 - PRLog -- History was made during the annual Jail Break 5K on Saturday, October 22, when the first runner crossed the finish line breaking all previous course records.

With more than 700 registered participants, race organizers closed registration and confirmed the 6th Jail Break 5K was sold out on Friday, October 21. An estimated 600 "jailbreakers," from elite athletes to joggers and walkers, escaped from the 130-year-old historic Old Jail Museum in St. Augustine, Fla. Participants raced through scenic St. Augustine over the Intracoastal Waterway via the "Vilano" Bridge to the finish line at the Vilano Beach Pavilion.

Setting a new course record with a finishing time of 17:44 and earning the Male Overall award was Cavanagh Brasington, 19, of West Columbia, SC. Brasington beat the previous course record of 19:54 set by Matt Todd in 2019.

The 2022 Female Overall winner was Chelsea Baker, 33, of Columbia, SC with finishing time of 20:31. At four years old, N. Flitcroft, of Palm Coast, Fla. completed the race as the youngest participant and the oldest participant was Kay Jones, 81, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. All race finishers received this year's distinctive skeleton key medal and commemorative race t-shirt.

The annual Jail Break 5K is organized by Investing in Kids (INK!) and Old Town Trolley Tours of St. Augustine as a fundraiser to support academic initiatives and classroom resources in St. Johns County public schools.

Race organizers launched a School Team Challenge with the 2022 event, inviting St. Johns County School District students, families, friends, faculty, and staff to participate in the 5K event while encouraging a friendly competition. With the highest number of registered participants, St. Johns Virtual School won a $1,000 grant and earned the one-of-a-kind Jail Break 5K Team Challenge trophy. Osceola Elementary School won second place and received a $500 school grant, and Switzerland Point Middle School won a $250 grant in third place.
