NC Native & Filmmaker, Shequeta L. Smith, Brings Award-Winning Short Film to Cucalorus Film Festival

Short Film Takes on the Rampant Misogynoir in the Hip-Hop Industry

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Nov. 14, 2022 - PRLog -- Fresh off three film festival wins for her comedy short film, "Dick Control," which satirizes the rampant misogynoir in the hip-hop industry, NC Native and filmmaker, Shequeta L. Smith, returns to North Carolina for the Cucalorus Film Festival this week. Loosely based on Smith's experiences as a college rep for Def Jam Records — while a student at NC State — Smith's film will play twice at the 28th Annual Cucalorus Film Festival.

Starring Curtis Hamilton ("Insecure," "Kings of Napa"), the film drops us into the flamboyant lifestyle of Richard "Trigga" Simmons, a rich, Grammy-nominated rapper with a revolving door of groupies. When Richard has a one-night stand with a beautiful witch and kicks her out, she places a curse that can only be broken once he learns how to respect women.

The film recently won Best Comedy Short at The City of Angels Women's Film Festival, Best Cinematography at The Broad Humor Film Festival, and Best Cinematography at The Atlanta Comedy Film Festival, and has several upcoming screenings at film festivals from all over the world.

"The disrespect that rappers have for black women has been an ongoing issue in the hip-hop industry. After growing tired of watching this behavior play out, with rappers like Da Baby, Tory Lanez, and most recently Drake's controversy with Meg Thee Stallion, I decided to make a movie with a message that addresses this issue head-on in the hopes that it can start a much-needed conversation," said Smith.

The 28th annual Cucalorus Film Festival will showcase 136 independent and international films, November 16-20, 2022, in Wilmington, NC. The festival will also feature a schedule of performances and a series of conversations about social justice. Film screenings will take place at Thalian Hall, on campus at UNCW, and in their community cinema at Jengo's Playhouse. More than 200 artists will attend from all over the world.

"Dick Control" plays in the "Sarcastic Fringehead Shorts: Comedy" film block on Friday, November 18, 2022, at Thalian Hall Mainstage Auditorium at 3:45 pm, and then again on Sunday, November 20, 2022, at Jengo's Playhouse at 10:30 am.
