Advocate Erin Brockovich Speaks to ABC15 News About Camp Lejeune Water Contamination

CONWAY, S.C. - Oct. 31, 2022 - PRLog -- Conway, S.C.- Celebrated public health advocate Erin

Brockovich recently spoke to ABC15 News about her years-long fight to find justice for those

who fell ill after being exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune in North

Carolina. Brockovich has joined forces with Camp Lejeune Legal to host a series of

public town halls across the country to inform those who might have been affected

about their rights.

For decades, high levels of cancer-causing chemicals leached into the groundwater at

Camp Lejeune, the largest Marine base on the East Coast. Indiscriminate dumping of

waste into landfills, leaking fuel tanks and other sources of contamination poisoned the

drinking water of hundreds of thousands of veterans, their families – including children

in-utero – and workers on base, resulting in birth defects and devastating, often fatal

For years, the Marine Corps knew about contaminated wells but did not shut them

down. Even after the pollution was confirmed, the Defense Department obstructed

efforts to study the extent of the harm. In August, President Biden signed into law the

Honoring our PACT Act, which includes the Camp Lejeune Justice Act. Now, victims

who lived or worked for more than 30 days at Camp Lejeune, or who were exposed

in-utero, between 1953 and 1987 can take legal action against the U.S. government for

their exposure to toxic water on the base.

"Part of keeping them accountable going forward will be up to us," Brockovich said. "It is

up to us to get together in numbers, to come forward and actually start demanding that

we hold our government accountable – especially to our military."
