Announcing a new voice in local school board elections: The Berkeley Parents Union

Voters need to know who current Berkeley school parents endorse for School Board.
BERKELEY, Calif. - Sept. 7, 2022 - PRLog -- Berkeley residents perennially vote in extra taxes to invest generously in Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD). How well is this investment helping our kids succeed? Are we informed enough about school board elections to make sure this investment is serving all our kids?

This is the situation in Berkeley:
  • Nearly 20% of our $197.2 million school budget is from local taxes.
  • Berkeley High graduates 88% of students, but only 60% of them are prepared for college. The percentage of those who meet A-G requirements for UC schools are unevenly allocated — with only 24% Black, 50% LatinX, but 74% of all white graduates able to attend our state college system — a persistent equity gap.
  • Only a small fraction of Berkeley voters are families with kids at BUSD schools — these families are the ones who know first-hand the successes and challenges of our schools.
We need elected leaders who are committed to maintaining & strengthening connections with caregivers, as the best representatives of students.

Here is our website:

A community resource: The Berkeley Parents Union (BPU), a grass roots, intersectional, parent-led organization, has posted videos, transcripts & audio files of its interviews of school board director candidates with 10 questions based on the skills required of directors.

Reichi Lee:
"...there is one truth that I have discovered. It is that young people can do more than we think. They really can: whatever we think, multiply that. And sometimes in the process of doing it, they surprise even themselves."

KaDijah Brown:
"We're trying to create opportunities and curate spaces for people to be seen… and to feel like they are a part of a collective group that is working to reach a goal. Those are the ways in which I think will help to move us forward, help us to progress as people who are rallied around education for our young people."
