On this month in the year 622 AD, Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) and his associates referred to as Sahabas were forced to leave the city of Mecca, the birthplace of the Prophet and Islam. They were prosecuted as well as stopped from spreading the message of Islam. And they returned to the city after the conquest of Mecca in 629 AD. Muharram has special significance for a major section of Muslims. As it is on the 10th day of Muharram, Imam Hussain, the Prophet's grandson, along with at least 70 of his companions, including several family members, was immolated in the battle of Karbala. Therefore, Muslims mourn the sacrifice of Imam Hussain for the first 10 days of Muharram. Observance of the month of Muharram The month of Muharram is observed by different sections of the Muslim community in different ways. Some observe a fast to mourn the death of Imam Hussein, and his family members. Offer extra prayers, and spend long hours in the mosque attending gatherings in remembrance of the sacrifice of Imam Hussein. Shia Muslims also engage in mourning rituals. Some Muslims also gather at mosques to cry over Hussein's death hence by doing this they honor the sacrifices made in the Battle of Karbala. While many participate in processions and self-flagellation while chanting 'Ya Hussein' loudly on the Day of Ashura. Muslims beat themselves with sharp objects like knives or chains which have blades attached to them in acts of self-flagellation. Many Muslims fast on the Day of Ashura, as well as on other days in the month of Muharram, to express their gratitude. Most Muslims also abstain from attending and celebrating all joyous events during this period. They also avoid f dressing up and wearing jewelry as a symbol of mourning and only wear only black colored clothes. For Muslims, the month of Muharram 2022 marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. It is also a period to lament the loss of life. Muharram is a significant and holy month for everyone.
