-- A Giant Comes to a Young Boy's Rescue in 'Trickster'
Loosely based on the author's adventures as a young boy in Marienbad, Czechoslovakia, Trickster: The Being from My Mind
envisions a giant who appears when most needed to help the adventurous child when he gets in trouble.
Ten-year-old Josef first meets the giant after he contracts pneumonia and ends up in a coma. "Trickster,"
as Josef calls the giant, is a mirror image of himself. His friend Trickster not only has the ability to become huge, but he can also change himself into other creatures or even things.
Trickster tells Josef that he will appear in Joseph's waking world if he is ever needed. Josef doesn't believe it's possible, yet it happens. Josef loves to explore the countryside. When he encounters danger while hunting for lost treasure, Trickster comes to his rescue as a giant.
When Josef and his friends hike to a hidden hot spring high in the hills above the city, Josef once again needs Trickster's help. Is Trickster: The Being from My Mind
a figment of a boy's imagination, or does he really exist?About the Author:
Jiri Hubacek immigrated to Canada in 1968 after Russia invaded Czechoslovakia. Now retired after a career assaying in mines in Alaska and Canada, he lives in Victoria, British Columbia. "My childhood was both difficult and happy. I spent long hours doing exactly the same as Josef did in Trickster,
exploring and playing with my friends outside. When I was 10 years old, we lived in Marienbad, the city that is central to my story (established in about 1780). My mother actually worked in one of the resorts mentioned in the story." This is the author's first book, and he is writing the sequel.
