NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - July 19, 2022 - PRLog -- Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS), a tuition-free public charter school that currently services 500 students in grades 5-12, recently announced that graduating senior Sabrina Costa has been awarded the Jacobs Family Scholarship .

The Jacobs Family Scholarship award is for $35,000 over four years and is awarded to a New Bedford student who is pursuing a STEAM education degree. Costa will be attending UMass Dartmouth and plans to study psychology and psychiatry.

Sabrina Costa is the daughter of Antonieta and Domingos Costa of New Bedford. Sabrina was class president her sophomore, junior and senior years. She served as a Student Ambassador and was a member of the National Honor Society. Sabrina was in the top ten of her graduating class. In her senior year, she worked in the 5th grade classrooms as a Teacher's Assistant. She is also a recipient of a Global Gala scholarship.

"I am excited to start a new chapter. Thanks to the College and Career Center at GLCPS, I am ahead of the curve. I will be attending UMass Dartmouth in the fall with 18 college credits that didn't cost me or my family a dime. This is huge for my family because college is so expensive, which is why I am so grateful," said Costa.

"We congratulate Sabrina on earning this prestigious scholarship," said Dr. Stephen Furtado, Executive Director of GLPCS. "We are proud of her academic accomplishments and know the future holds great things for her. We wish her continued success in her academic journey at UMass Dartmouth."

GLCPS is currently renovating a historic building located at 106 Bullard Street in New Bedford creating "One School, One Campus."

About Global Learning Public Charter School

Open to New Bedford residents, Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) is a tuition-free public charter school that currently serves 500 students in grades 5-12. Launched in 2002 as a Horace Mann charter school, GLCPS became a Commonwealth charter school in 2006. In order to generate a culture of personalization, the school setting and class sizes are deliberately small. Students, faculty and administration know each other well and teachers are able to tailor the curriculum to the needs and level of each student. GLCPS offers an exciting and challenging interdisciplinary curriculum that follows and builds upon the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Students learn to work collaboratively in teams, use technology meaningfully in their coursework, strengthen all elements of their communication skills, as well as develop the necessary skills to become engaged and ethical contributors to a global society.  GLCPS capitalizes on the exceptional resources of the region (for example, marine sciences), and ties these resources to their curriculum and instruction. For further information please contact Amey Bissonnette, Director of Development, at 508-991-4105 or visit www.glcps.org.
