By: La Jolla Montessori School Bolstered with a 2021 La Jolla Light academic award for 'Best Preschool (https://www.lajollalight.com/ About The New Director Dr. Davis graduated from Emory University with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. At the University of Georgia, she earned both Master of Arts in Applied Child Development and Doctorate degrees. Following graduation, Heather began a 15-year journey in public teacher education. Pursuing a long-term interest in Dr. Maria Montessori's work, she relocated to San Diego and trained as an AMI Primary Guide at the Montessori Institute of San Diego (MISD). For three years, she taught in MISD's noted bilingual program as an English-speaking guide. She has also served as a Head Guide, floating teacher, and administrative assistant at other Association Montessori International (AMI) affiliated schools in the area. After becoming a Montessori Mom to her two children, she became passionate about Dr. Montessori's pedagogy. Drawing on the aspects of how young children construct their sense of self and the role adults play in helping them understand their time and place in the world has been a personal passion that should serve her well going forward. The Director's Goals The Director's initial goal is to facilitate a smooth transition for the Fall program. "I have had the pleasure to meet with and learn from our teachers and administrative teams concerning our roadmap for the future," says Davis. "I've also observed and noted strengths of our current toddler and primary programs." Her next set of goals consists of providing staff members with the necessary support to grow the school's parent education and outreach programs and to find avenues for staff to deepen their understanding of child development, exceptionality, and inclusion. In the coming year, she hopes to re-introduce classroom observation with parents; present a series of parent education talks; and re-build a social event calendar to help fund professional development. "For the past several months, I've been embedded in our La Jolla Montessori School processes, procedures and policies with the goal of creating an easy transition for all. I am so thankful to work with a staff of amazing professionals and to support the children and families we serve," she said. La Jolla Montessori School has a competitive enrollment program.
