Controversial Pacifica Radio Hutchinson Show Builds National Listener Audience
By: The Earl Ofari Hutchinson Show
The Earl Ofari Hutchinson Show is one of the more popular public radio shows. Hutchinson's slashing cutting edge commentary and opinion style has gained him a wide and avid following among radio listeners, political leaders, and the public.
The Earl Ofari Hutchinson Show is unique in another way. He rarely has guests or does interviews. Hutchinson believes the best guests are the listeners. His aim is to give them a public forum to express their thoughts and opinions on the issues of the day. This is something much lacking in talk radio. His show is as he puts it "an almost purely caller and listener driven show."
Hutchinson is an unabashed, unyielding, and unapologetic progressive in his slash and burn opinions on the issues. However, he is far from an orthodox toe the line progressive. He will infuriate progressives at times in skewering some of their positions on everything from race and racism to their attacks on the Democratic Party leadership. "I call it as I see it," says Hutchinson, "This often offends those who think they have me pigeonholed on the issues." Hutchinson says an honest commentator above all strives to be his or her own person on the airwaves and speak truth on the issues as they see it.
Hutchinson knows this will always infuriate someone but that's the price one must pay for being an independent Cassandra on the issues. The Earl Ofari Hutchinson Show, though, broadcast on a Los Angeles Pacifica station, continues to build a national audience through aggressive promotion and use of its stream kpfk.org and its focus almost exclusively on national issues.
