By: Colin J Casto CAMPAIGN LINK: https://www.kickstarter.com/ It's a box that grows plants. It's also beautiful, modular, sustainable, affordable, and plug and-play easy. The Plant Box is an indoor garden designed from the ground up to make an impact. Not only does it use sustainable materials, it's also affordable, meaning more people can start growing their own food in their home. As someone who finds climate change and environmental destruction very concerning, I've been motivated to find ways to engage more people in the fight for a better future, and I think empowering more people to start growing their own food is a great start. I've been interested in sustainable agriculture for as long as I can remember, seeing agriculture as a low-hanging fruit to beginning to solve the Earth's environmental crises. After becoming aware and involved in the hydroponics and urban growing fields, I thought the possibility of growing food super close to consumers could be really impactful. I quickly learned, however, that the energy, space, and labour requirements of urban farms significantly limit their ability to provide sustainable food to many people. The Plant Box's simple-to-use and highly-productive hydroponics system, coupled with its high-efficiency, warm-white LED grow light, makes growing your own food beautiful and intuitive. The Plant Box's hydroponic system grows plants above a fertile nutrient-water solution instead of soil. As the water evaporates, the roots grow down to find the lower water level while the plant's leaves grow to chase the sun-like LEDs. Backers of this project will receive a Plant Box, informational resources, and all the seeds and nutrients they need for their first year of growing. In addition, my hope is that most backers will find a sense of enjoyment and agency in growing their own food, as I experienced when I started gardening, that may lead them to finding greater engagement in their food system and other movements aiming to make the planet and our lives on it better. With just 15 days left in this campaign, your support is needed to raise funds to make this project a successful one.
