HD PHYSICAL THERAPY Recognizes June as National Migraine & Headache Awareness Month

BURLINGTON, Mass. - June 7, 2022 - PRLog -- June is National Migraine & Headache Awareness Month (MHAM.) Migraine impacts 40 million people in the United States, one billion people across the globe and is recognized as the #2 cause of disability worldwide. This year, MHAM's theme is Advocate for Treatment Access. The theme will help break down barriers that stand between patients and treatments.

More than 50% of people with migraine go undiagnosed. Providing educational resources is the first step to reducing the stigma of migraine. Ensuring those living with migraine receive the care they need is not an easy task. But spreading awareness about migraine is one of the most important things we can do as advocates for treatment access.

So where does outpatient physical therapy fit into the management of migraine headaches? The answer depends on the individual headache sufferer, as there is a wide range of clinical presentations in patients with migraine headaches. Physical therapy primarily involves work on the muscles and joints in the peripheral system. This means how an individual migraine sufferer responds to physical therapy depends partly on the extent to which the muscles and joints are involved in their headaches. The goals of physical therapy treatment are generally to normalize the musculoskeletal system as much as possible in order to reduce stress and tension on the soft tissues and joints. At HD Physical Therapy, we work individually with our migraine patients on the best ways to utilize modalities such as, IASTM, stretching and exercise, dry needling, and manual, traction & massage techniques.
