A unique and exciting new book a little about Indian dance, and a lot about empowerment, representation, and kids being confident and proud of sharing things they love to do with others.

"Dancing Deepa," a 32-page book authored by Suchi Sairam and illustrated by Vidya Vasudevan (Artful Whims (https://www.facebook.com/VidyasArtStudio)), has already been written, edited, and illustrated. It's now in the final steps of being prepared for physical and electronic printing. Now, we just want to get it into as many young and curious hands as possible – and this means, getting it into school and local libraries. Won't you join the "Dancing Deepa" team to help us do that?

Author Suchi Sairam shares, "The idea for the book Dancing Deepa started through a conversation with one of my adult dance students, who was bemoaning the fact there are so few books about Indian art forms that were child friendly. "Dancing Deepa" is a passion project inspired by my love of Bharatanatyam and teaching - but most importantly inspired by all of my students whose voices I wanted to amplify."

Her vision for the project has children at its core. "I feel they deserve to see themselves in books, and that their journeys should be shared with others. I also feel that their peers should see them in books, and see this diversity expressed. As a result, I came up with the idea to use Kickstarter to boost distribution of the book into school and public libraries to share this story faster and more widely."

On the theme of representation, she continues, "There are many ways in which diversity and representation manifest in our culture and communities today. Representation is not optional for a healthy society - it's a necessity. My hope is that Dancing Deepa helps kids of all backgrounds and interests to find the courage and confidence to share what they love. More Sharing --> More Caring --> More Understanding."
