MIAMI - May 17, 2022 - PRLog -- An Italian Legend Becomes History in 'The Rose of Balarm'

The patron saint of Palermo (Balarm) is Santa Rosalia Sinibaldi. Although there is no documented proof of her existence, her life story is a legend in Italy.

In this historical tale, author Nigel Patten imagines how Rosalia (Rusùlia in the book) may have lived, from her birth in 1130 to her death in 1165.

The Rose of Balarm: A Tale of 12th-Century Sicily takes readers back 900 years to a time when myths and legends ruled the land. Rusùlia was said to be the daughter of a Lombard count and a Norman noblewoman. At the tender age of 14, she was given in marriage by the king to a French count, a man she did not want to marry. Rusùlia fled to a monastery and then to a cave.

Years later she returned to Balarm and became known for performing minor "miracles." Once again she fled her notoriety and returned to live in a cave, which is where Rusùlia died in her thirties. Nearly five centuries later, her bones were discovered in the cave and were then paraded around the city. Balarm at that time was suffering from a plague, which disappeared three days after Rusùlia's bones were displayed.

Was she legend or saint?
