Community Leader Carmela Spikes Williams Named as Finalist for WSAV's Remarkable Women Award 2022

VIDALIA, Ga. - April 25, 2022 - PRLog -- Community Leader, Mother of Seven and eternal optimist are just a few ways to describe how Carmela Spikes- Williams lives her life. Carmela is no stranger to adversity, but she continues to dream big and live out loud on purpose. Throughout March, Women's History Month, WSAV News 3's Jessica Coombs will be highlighted local women who inspire, lead, and forge the way for others. It's not just about one day or one month — it's about what they do, day-in and day-out, says Coombs. From your nominations across the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry, our station chose four women for consideration for WSAV's 2022 Remarkable Women Award.

Growing up the child of a single mother, Carmela experienced hardship at an early age. Finding herself pregnant as a teen girl, she struggled and dropped out of school in the spring of 11^th grade and returned in the Fall of  her senior year. Carmela gives credit to important mentors that saw in her what she didn't see in herself.

One day I asked my mentor, I said, 'why do you help me so much?' And so, she told me her situation and her story, and she said, 'The only thing I want you to do is when you get on your feet, I want you to do this for somebody else.' And that stuck with me," Carmela said, describing her journey of going back to school and graduating with honors in both high school and college.

Fast forward Carmela is happily married to her husband of 18 years, Troy Williams. They are co-pastors of Becoming One Outreach Ministries located in Vidalia, Georgia. We have a whole vision of the next 10 years: how many more young moms we want to help, how many more scholarships we want to give away," she explained. Some of those dreams include creating a community ministry complex with buildings to offer resources like her parenting program, baby closet and other youth and community outreach efforts.
