Follow on Google News | Maryland-Based Non-Profit, Design Heals is Honoring Mothers That Have Lost a Child to Gun ViolenceBy: Design Heals Non-Profit Why Was Design Heals Founded? "Design Heals is a non-profit I started in 2018. It was initially founded out of frustration with the amount of waste and unusable furniture inventory produced by my staging and design business. Later, I paired our excess inventory with my desire to be more intentional about using the business to serve the community. Furniture waste isn't a phenomenon limited to the staging and interior design industry, it's not uncommon to see sofas and old furniture piled up on the side of the road. Through our community service, we have come to understand the life changing power of having a dining table to eat at with your children, a comfortable sofa to relax on after a hard day of work or a dresser to store your clothes. As designers, we truly understand the power of an environment to improve mood and well-being. Our mission with Design Heals is to use our excess furniture and design abilities to improve the lives of others. Since inception, Design Heals has partnered with organizations to furnish the homes of refugees, domestic violence survivors that have relocated and families/individuals in need, foster children and a homeless shelter". Why Did You Choose This Specific Population? "Like everyone else, I'm astounded and concerned with the level of violence in our cities. In 2021, Baltimore City suffered 337 homicides. We have served many different populations through Design Heals since its inception. This year, my team and I decided to serve mothers that have lost their children to gun violence and incarceration in Baltimore City. Behind the names of the murdered are human beings with mothers and families that have been left behind to mourn them. As Mother's Day approaches, we want to remind these mothers that have experienced this devastating loss, that they deserve to be continuously celebrated." How Can the Community Get Involved in the Mother's Day Cease Fire Weekend? The Cease Fire Weekend will be taking place in Baltimore City from Saturday May 7th-May 8th.
