What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological condition which becomes evident in early childhood as result of a brain damage either during pregnancy, childbirth or soon after birth and affects body movement and muscle coordination.

While Cerebral Palsy may be caused by damage to parts of the brain that control movement, posture and balance, it can also result due to abnormal development of the cerebral motor cortex during fetal growth. The condition can also be caused by deprivation of oxygen during birth or infection such as meningitis leading to brain damage. This damage cannot be repaired and therefore the person lives with the disabilities for life.

Cerebral Palsy is the commonest motor disorder and the second-most common disability found in children as studies show that over 700,000 people currently live with the condition.
