Canadian Connections Urges IRCC to Expedite the Evacuation and Relocation of Afghans to Canada
TORONTO - March 18, 2022 - PRLog -- As an organization created by grassroots volunteers to support Afghan refugees fleeing to Canada, our hearts go out to the millions of Ukrainians trying to escape tyranny and the horrors of war. Sadly, the Afghan newcomers we assist know only too well what it's like to be forced to flee their homeland to survive.

We greatly appreciate the government initiative that has so far enabled nearly 9,000 Afghans to come to Canada. But what began as a wave of evacuation and humanitarian assistance has slowed to a trickle – fewer than ¼ of the government's stated goal of 40,000 refugees have actually arrived. The Canadian Connections (CC) Board of Directors urges the Canadian government to live up to its commitment and expedite efforts to bring 40,000 Afghans to Canada.

While Afghanistan may have disappeared from the headlines, the urgent needs of its people have not. As the eyes of the world look elsewhere, the brutal Taliban regime continues to oppress and terrorize the Afghan people - especially women. The situation on the ground is extremely dangerous. Human rights activists, social justice advocates, journalists, interpreters and many others who need our help are being identified, tracked, threatened and beaten. Fear, anxiety, hunger and suffering are part of daily life for an entire population.

Meanwhile, thousands of Afghans who applied to Canada months ago have received little response. They are frightened and trapped, wondering why their pleas seem to go unheard, despite the government's official policy. They need a path to safety now. We recognize that evacuation from Afghanistan is challenging. But we urge IRCC to speed up the evaluation process, renew its logistical and humanitarian efforts and fulfill its promise to Afghans seeking the chance to start a new life in Canada.

The current plight of Ukraine is heartbreaking; we welcome and support Canada's pledge to help Ukrainian women and children find safe refuge here. One humanitarian crisis does not erase another; more than one door can remain open at the same time. We ask the government to honour its promise to Afghan applicants by doing everything in its power to bring them to Canada.
