Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein Reveals He Is a Victim of Child Sexual Abuse

NSW, Australia - March 11, 2022 - PRLog -- Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein has revealed first time, he was the victim of sexual assault as a child when he was young at age of 16 year.

He was asked on Friday by media about whether he would discipline members of his own party who were heard complaining during Question Time in reaction to a question about the state's forthcoming Commission of Investigation into child sexual abuse.

"I have great sympathy with people that are victim-fighters. I have good empathy as I have gone in their past," Mr Gutwein told reporters. He also added, he was sexually assaulted during Christmas holidays by a former teacher when he was a child.

The Labor Opposition Leader mentioned a question from a Tasmanian victim-survivor of child sexual violence who said the Premier had shown "no sympathy" on the matter.

Mr Gutwein said he had not "spoken to anyone about the reasons about why I crossed the floor in 2002".

He said he had touched out to the victim-survivor who took violation at the squealing of government MPs. "I hope they get in touch," he said.

Mr Gutwein has reached out to the victim-survivor mentioned in parliament and has apologized on behalf of the government.
