NEW YORK - Feb. 15, 2022 - PRLog -- This year, I decided to make a monthly contribution to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in New York. The hospital helps children fight cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, but families are never charged for the services.

Beyond knowing they save children's lives, I chose Saint Jude's for my contributions for a few other personal reasons, too. First, Saint Jude was my mother's favorite saint. She placed his statues on tables in the corners of rooms where she prayed every morning and night. Mom often invited her children and grandchildren to pray with her. While praying, she called on God and Saint Jude to intercede on our behalf, keep us safe, and rescue all who were suffering.

As a patron of Saint Jude for as long as I can remember, Mother used to tell a story about me as a toddler when she took me to our parish church in Fegge, Onitsha, Nigeria. However, when I came face to face with the big statue of Saint Jude in front of the church, I refused to go any further. When my mother asked why I refused to go any further, I told her that the "Saint Jude statue was throwing rocks at me."

I do not remember this incident, but I was a child who had a lot of imagination, and throwing rocks at passersby was what we did as children. My mother loves Saint Jude so much, and I am sure she will be joyful to know about my contributions to the hospital in her memory.

Second, I chose to contribute to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital in commemoration of my nephew, Okechuwu (Okey) Anyoha, who died of leukemia at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu. Okey was a fun adolescent who loved to play soccer. Our family endured a nightmare while my nephew was in UNTH's hematology department. We were asked to hunt for blood used for transfusion in the streets of Enugu.

What's more, the hematology department needed two days to obtain the results of routine blood counts, such as CBCs. Thinking of the awful conditions at UNTH and what our family endured, contributing to a place like Saint Jude's, where parents do not have to worry while their loved ones are sick, makes a lot of sense to me. I hope readers find their own reasons to help as well.
