Follow on Google News | Maricopa Council unanimously picks Manfredi as vice mayorBy: Vote Manfredi vice mayor Tuesday night, replacing Nancy Smith. Manfredi takes over the duties effective immediately. Manfredi was nominated by Smith and the vote for him was 7-0. The vice mayor title is mostly ceremonial but does carry some responsibilities. The vice mayor runs city council meetings in the absence of the mayor and would succeed Mayor Christian Price should he leave office for any reason. The vice mayor would serve until an election could be held to elect a permanent replacement, who would serve until the next mayoral election. The vice mayor also sits in for the mayor at state government agency meetings such as the Maricopa Association of Governments or Pinal County Regional Transportation committee and others, should the mayor be unable to attend. "It's cool to have council, people who I have worked with for seven years, at least some of them, put their faith in me and trust me with this position," Manfredi said. "I'll do everything I can to uphold that trust and do what is best for the city of Maricopa." A new vice mayor will be selected again in late 2022 after the city council election in November, in which three council members – Manfredi, Henry Wade and Rich Vitiello – are up for re-election. The position is rotated every year, with Smith having served the past two years. Smith said she nominated Manfredi in part because of his involvement with a variety of transportation committees and organizations around the state, as she feels that issue is crucial to Maricopa in the coming years.
