PRLog -- NAACP DeKalb will celebrate Black History Month with a virtual program on Saturday, February 12, 2022, starting promptly at 10:00 am. The theme this year is "Know Your History" and our keynote speaker is Dr. Akinyele Umoja, who is a scholar-activist and professor of Africana Studies at Georgia State University. He is also the author of an award-winning book We Will Shoot Back: Armed Resistance and the Mississippi Freedom Movement. Edmund Burke said, "those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it". We want to change that narrative and proclaim that history is our way of understanding who we are and why some things are the way they are today. Instead of someone else telling our story, we will tell our own story. Ms. Dee Smith, chairperson of the Remembrance Project Coalition said, "it was evident after we placed remembrance markers for lynching in DeKalb County that there was more that we needed to do to share our rich history. We knew we had to teach this history in the wake of Georgia and the other states that are trying to pass legislation to keep our history out of the school system." This year the Remembrance Project Coalition placed three markers in DeKalb County to remember the victims of racial terror in this county. We will tell our story with participation of students and community members in the area. The coalition is also working on unique and creative ways to introduce Black history to our youth. "We will be working with the DeKalb library system to make more books available to youth. Other activities to engage our youth will follow this year", said Ms. Smith.
