BRONX, N.Y. - Feb. 1, 2022 - PRLog -- On Sunday, February 20th, 2022 at 4:00pm Lehman Center for the Performing Arts will be presenting the Ballet Folklórico de México in their 70th anniversary tour! To commemorate the occasion, the company will return to the United States for an extended multi-city tour featuring renewed performances of the company's classic choreography. The company's US tour in Fall 2018 was a coast-to-coast success. The eight-week tour packed houses across the country and received an enthusiastic response from audience members new and old. Performances and educational activities drew strong support from Mexican-American communities in particular. Founded in 1952 by dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernández, Ballet Folklórico brings together the music, dance and costume of Mexican folklore from pre-Colombian civilizations through the modern era. The company has developed choreography for 40 ballets, composed of 60 folk dancers and musicians who have performed extensively across Mexico and abroad.

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts is located on the campus of CUNY Lehman College at 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, Bronx, NY 10468. Tickets for the Ballet Folklórico de México on Sunday, February 20th, 2022 at 4:00pm ($50, $45, $35, $25) are on sale now online at https://www.lehmancenter.org/ballet-mexico

Lehman Center will be collaborating on this performance with the CUNY Mexican Studies Institute who will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of their founding in February of 2022! Founded in 2012, the Mexican Studies Institute of the City University of New York (CUNY MSI) is the first academic center on the East Coast specifically devoted to Mexican and Mexican-American studies. CUNY MSI is committed to boost the enrollment of Mexican and Mexican-American students in CUNY, promote equity and upward mobility through academic achievement, foster research focused on Mexico and Mexicans in New York, and collaborate with community-based organizations and public institutions to support and empower New Yorkers. CUNY MSI will be partnering with Amalia Hernández herself (the daughter of the late founder by the same name) to bring a masterclass of this historic art form to the students and community of their program. This is one of many social programs and cultural activities aimed to empower underserved communities in New York City.
