An environmental scan can improve talent decision making

CANBERRA, Australia - Jan. 24, 2022 - PRLog -- In today's labour market, knowledge is power for organisations. Workforce planning is becoming a more crucial process, and the Panorama subject matter experts say a key tool to support it is the environmental scan. An environmental scan is the process of tracking trends, opportunities and threats that could impact organisational success and influence future decisions. The Panorama experts have recently delved into how to conduct an environmental scan and how a PESTLE analysis fits in.

The purpose of an environmental scan is to gain an understanding of both internal and external conditions. For both factors, it's key to examine supply and demand.

When looking at internal supply, organisations develop an overview of their current workforce and what talent is available today. When looking at internal demand, it's about understanding what value the organisation as a whole creates, and how the workforce is able to deliver that value.

On the flip side, external supply involves consideration of outside recruitment drivers such as talent availability, required graduate skills and war for talent, to name just a few. Looking at external demand is where the PESTLE analysis comes into play.

A PESTLE analysis considers all the demands placed on an organisation's workforce by the world outside. It can be thought of as a more evolved version of a simple SWOT analysis, since it investigates a range of areas including political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental factors.

"Environmental scanning brings vital workforce data and information to your fingertips, allowing you to make crucial strategic decisions for your business," said Blake Proberts (Co-Founder & Managing Director). "Understanding the factors affecting the performance of your business is invaluable to creating a strong plan for future success."

The Panorama experts believe there is no right answer for how often one should perform an environmental scan. An annual scan might be a safe bet, but then it also depends on specific business needs and how long it takes to pull all the research together.
