Juror Erin Jenoa Gilbert selected 48 pieces by 30 artists from 590 entries from 204 artists from across the United States and as far away as Canada, Cuba, Japan, Singapore, Sudan, and Ukraine. The quality of the entries was very high, and made for a challenging task for the juror. New Jersey artists selected for the exhibition are: Tracy DiTolla (Wyckoff, NJ), Steven Epstein (Edison, NJ), Sandy Furst (Basking Ridge, NJ), Anita Gladstone (Springfield, NJ), Valerie Huhn (Flemington, NJ), David Z. Orban (Trenton, NJ), Robert Reid (Frenchtown, NJ), and Chrissy Wallace (Millington, NJ).
Three artists were awarded cash prizes:
First Prize: Alireza Vaziri Rahimi (Davis, CA)
Second Prize: Monica Mendes (Miami, FL)
Third Prize: Myra Joyce Nowlin (Abilene, TX)
In addition, Tracy DiTolla (Wycoff, NJ), Steven Epstein (Edison, NJ) and Gregory Hennen (Dyke, VA) were awarded solo exhibitions at The Center for Contemporary Art by The Center's Exhibitions Committee.
When speaking about the selection process Gilbert wrote, "It was a pleasure to review the 590 applications submitted. I was thrilled to see such a rich range of media - painting, photography, sculpture, collage, video and assemblage…. For me a work of art must understand the context in which it operates."
Juror Erin Jenoa Gilbert is a New York based curator and art advisor, specializing in Modern and Contemporary Art of the African Diaspora. Most recently the Curator of African American Manuscripts at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, she has also held positions at The Art Institute of Chicago and The Studio Museum in Harlem.
