BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Jan. 3, 2022 - PRLog -- On the morning of December 26, founder and director of equine rescue All Seated In A Barn, Tahlia Fischer saw that an animal kill pen based in Oklahoma, was about to ship 18 wild mustangs to Mexico to be slaughtered for human consumption. If anyone wanted to save the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) branded horses, this was their last chance. As a rescue nonprofit, Fischer knew the drill: She needed to round up her nearly 19 thousand followers so they could buy as many mustangs as possible to avoid this fate.

In 2019, BLM introduced the Adoption Incentive Program for people to adopt mustangs and donkeys at a $1,000 bursary per animal, so they can go to "good homes." The stipulation is they must keep them for a minimum of a year. Many private owners are using this bursary for a sinister gain whereby they adopt up to 4 or more mustangs and donkeys at a time, holding them for the time period required for them to receive and cash their cheques, then "flipping" them to kill pens, which buy the horses to sell at auction. This is illegal activity however, BLM branded horses and donkeys are not allowed to be sold to kill pens.

In May 2021, an exposé stated that the federal government was aware this was happening and had pledged to enforce the The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 to protect the wild mustangs and donkeys. This is not the case though, as kill pens are still buying and selling wild mustangs and donkeys on a monthly basis. Both wild and pre-owned equine are still being shipped to slaughter across the Mexican border.

Equines that are apprehended by BLM receive a special brand on their necks. The brand indicates they are federally owned. BLM branded equines are often overlooked because they are wild and difficult to handle, making their chances of leaving a kill pen alive slim.

After 48 hours from the time Fischer saw the post about the 18 wild mustangs, she was able to successfully intercede for their safety; however, All Seated In A Barn is currently at full capacity with rescued equines, so the recent rescues have been moved to a rented pasture in Texas, paid for generously by donors, until loving homes can be found.

"We were lucky this time because our donors stepped up, so these mustangs will receive a space to roam and veterinary care", says Fischer, "but for every 18 mustangs saved, there are thousands more in line that will be sent to slaughter illegally."

"We are calling on the government to enforce the laws they put in place to stop the unnecessary slaughter, and shipment of wild donkeys and horses across the border. We are also  calling on equine owners to be responsible. Do not send your horses and donkeys to an auction because chances are, the horse you once loved and cared for will likely end up in a slaughterhouse. Connect to a shelter, or find them a loving home", says Fischer.

About All Seated In A Barn

Since 2019, All Seated In A Barn has been rescuing horses and donkeys from kill pens who would otherwise be shipped across the border to Mexico or Canada to be slaughtered for human consumption. Each month, Tahlia Fischer and the All Seated In A Barn team attend auctions in different parts of the United States in order to rescue horses and donkeys from slaughter and to rehabilitate them for adoption.
