Atheists Helping the Homeless, DC (AHHDC) will use the competitively sought funds from ($500) awarded by American Humanist Association (AHA) to distribute socks and toiletries to people experiencing homelessness in Washington DC. The AHHDC is a group of atheist volunteers and citizens. They distribute items and to people experiencing homelessness. As atheists, the AHHDC believe in basic human goodness and want to nurture that. They are integral parts of our society and are proud to be your family, your friends, and your neighbors and they want to help our community. The AHHDC is not a religion. They do not preach. People experiencing homelessness are just like you and me. They have dreams, goals, and stories to tell. The AHHDC clients are homeless for many reasons, sometimes due to the death of a loved one, sometimes because they are members of the working poor, sometimes through illness that caused them to lose their jobs, and for various other reasons. Many people are just one paycheck away from homelessness. They are struggling to get back on their feet. They may have day jobs or part-time jobs, but they cannot afford homes, even small apartments. They may sleep in shelters, on the street, or in their cars. They need toiletries to look presentable as they look for work, and the AHHDC provides them in sizes they can carry wherever they walk. They walk everywhere they go. People without homes need socks, and mini-flashlights. If you are on your feet all day, extra socks are a necessity. Flashlights provide a sense of security, even in shelters. The AHA Empowering Action Award will provide much help to many people. The AHHDC operates entirely through donated support.
