Follow on Google News | New Children's Book "Gumbo Joy" Teaches About the Blending of CulturesBy: Planting People Growing Justice The author learned the value of being a leader and community advocate growing up in New Orleans, LA, while attending St. Augustine High School, an all African-American male Catholic institution. Dixon is committed to providing families with the key tools to reach their dreams. It's imperative that young people see themselves represented in books and "Gumbo Joy" is one of the ways that he's working to achieve that goal. Dixon is a fan of gumbo and would visit the home of all his neighborhood friends to partake of a bowl of "gumbo joy" as a child. "Gumbo Joy" is the story of Rose, her father, and the cultural significance of the pot of gumbo they cook together each Sunday. As the aroma of gumbo fills the air, her father reminds her that "Gumbo is the smell of love." The book is also one that teaches counting. When family members arrive for the meal, it's a joyful celebration of family, love, and culture.
