RICHMOND, Texas - Nov. 26, 2021 - PRLog -- Sugarland Toastmasters Club sponsored a Youth Leadership Program (YLP) with the Fort Bend County Juvenile Detention Center-Special Programs where Christy Roy is the Director. Sessions were held for 2 hours daily in Richmond, Texas earlier in November with a Closeout Celebration Party. Twelve participants ages 16-18 years old received a Certificate of Completion along with gift bags. Lives were transformed by this strategic initiative.

Youth Leadership is an entity of Toastmasters International that provides communication and leadership skills through practical experience. The program is presented during or after school, or on weekends. In the workshop, young people learn valuable skills including:
  • Evaluating their own speaking ability
  • Preparing and giving speeches
  • Giving impromptu talks
  • Controlling their voice, vocabulary and gestures
  • Giving constructive feedback and more
The workshops are structured for small group learning and are limited to 25 students. They are presented by a coordinator who attends each meeting. Meetings generally follow a format similar to that of a Toastmasters club meeting, with an announced agenda that includes practice in parliamentary procedure, prepared speeches and the selection of presiding officers.

Monique Lampkin was the Project Team Lead; Coordinators were Michael Andrade (DTM), Dr. John Knight, Andrew Paultanis (Assistant Chair of Youth Leadership Programs & DTM), Melba Lee, Javier Florez (DTM) and Dr.Johnrich Levine. *DTM means "Distinguished Toastmaster" the highest award and educational level in Toastmasters.

Lampkin is proud of the team that diligently served for 7 days to impact lives for the next generation."I appreciate the Toastmasters volunteers who made this a success." I salute Fort Bend County Juvenile Detention Center Staff for accepting my phone call and recognized the need for government and community to partner."  "The joint collaboration makes our county strong as we  positively impact our areas."

Sugarland Club #6294 meets every Friday at 7:30 a.m. virtually and is open to the public. Visit https://www.sugarlandtoastmasters.com
