By: Japanese Martial Arts Center On November 11th, JMAC released a video that portrays the beauty and intensity of karate kata. Nicklaus Suino Sensei demonstrates Seisan kata, which is thought to be more than 300 years old. While the movements of kata may not look impressive physically, there's a lot more going on mentally within the martial artist. Each kata is like a record of a battle between you and an opponent. Practicing a kata over and over again changes you. It fine tunes how you use your body and trains you to think more systematically. You learn to punch more efficiently, your balance improves, you become more powerful and more relaxed. Mentally, you must be fully in the moment. You'll experience ebbs and flows of intensity, the charges of the fast sequences, and the meditative sensations of the slow parts. To show this emotion, the video uses a passionate score that matches the kata's intensity, as well as slow motion to emphasize the power behind each movement. There are multiple video angles to capture the kata, and even drone shots to follow the movements up close. Filmed and edited by Katie Curtis, this video is sure to inspire martial artists everywhere.
