New Platform Launches Making It Easy to Shop Online for Ethical Products
People Heart Planet launches its ethical shopping platform—an aggregator site for sustainable and fair-trade goods.
People Heart Planet's founders, Deven Nelson and Maithreyi Ramdas, say they are on a mission to build the largest and best ethical shopping site, giving people an alternative to mainstream shopping sites. They define "ethical" as companies that are fully committed in their mission and practices to promoting fair trade and sustainability. A brand must be at least fair trade or sustainable to be included, and may also be vegan and organic. They vet brands by reading through company websites and sustainability reports and researching third-party verifications like Good on You and the Ethical Consumer magazine. "If prioritizing people and the planet are the heart of a company's mission, then we want them on our platform," Nelson says.
Nelson and Ramdas met while living as expats in Singapore and volunteering for a climate change NGO. According to Ramdas, "We agreed that supporting companies that share our values is really important, and we knew we were not alone in this." According to Futerra's (https://www.wearefuterra.com/
People Heart Planet launched with over 5,000 products and 100 brands and has plans to ramp up quickly, adding hundreds more brands and thousands more products in late 2021 and early 2022. But Nelson and Ramdas are focused on more than growing a business. "People Heart Planet is more than a shopping platform. We are joining a growing movement for economic, environmental and racial justice," says Ramdas. Nelson adds, "When consumers change their habits to buy from ethical companies, they are taking action to fight climate change, end extreme poverty, advance women rights. We know one person's actions aren't enough to solve these giant problems, but collective action is the driving force of social change. We're excited to be a part of that positive movement."
