-- "The Lonely Girls" Project began in 2011 after Constance McBride's mother moved from her home to an assisted living facility. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and lived out her last years between two worlds. What started as a portrait of her became a collection of works inspired by the women she lived with. The Lonely Girls were first exhibited in 2013. After a proposal was accepted at Rehoboth Art League, McBride expanded on the project in 2021 and is receiving sponsorship from Making Sense of Alzheimer's, a platform managed within University of Pennsylvania. It's a creative space for people to understand the past, present and future of Alzheimer's disease. McBride is donating 10% of every sale to raise research funding for Making Sense of Alzheimer's.
With ceramic sculpture and installations, McBride explores issues most experienced by women, focusing on themes of aging and memory. Her clay busts are hand built, sculpted and fired. Surface treatments for Lonely Girls include under glazes, glazes, oxides, stains acrylics, pastels and wax. Baling wire and other miscellaneous electrical wires are added post firing. McBride earned a BA from Arcadia University, Glenside, PA. Notable exhibitions include Craft Forms at Wayne Art Center in Wayne, PA, The Clay Studio National in Philadelphia, PA, Beyond the Brickyard at Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, MT and a Contemporary Forum Grant Recipients Show at Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, AZ. Currently living and working in Chester Springs, PA she is actively involved with art communities around the Delaware Valley.
McBride's exhibit will be on display in the Tubbs Gallery at Rehoboth Art League, 12 Dodds Lane, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. An opening reception will take place on Friday, November 12, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. An artist talk will be presented on November 13, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. Images available upon request.
