Flute World to Host Body Mapping Workshop On October 16, 2021
By: Flute World
The process of Body Mapping helps musicians not only avoid performance injuries, but also enhances the performance technique through self-awareness of practical anatomy and efficient, dynamic, and coordinated movement. William Conable, professor of cello at the Ohio State University School of Music, developed the practical application of Body Mapping to music performance when he observed how students move when playing music. He came to understand that students move when playing according to how they think they are structured as opposed to how they are actually structured. Body Mapping promotes music performance without limitations by encouraging wellness and enhancing a musician's expressive possibilities.
Hosted by Amy Likar, Director of Training for the Association for Body Mapping Education (bodymap.org (https://www.bodymap.org/
Amy began her impressive career as a flutist. While recovering from stress-related performance injuries, she became fascinated with performance health and wellness. Since that time, Amy has incorporated her expertise in Body Mapping and the Alexander Technique into her masterclasses and flute teaching, as well as her chamber music coaching. Amy has trained, licensed, and mentored more than 40 Body Mapping Practitioners to date.
"Sponsoring the Body Mapping Workshop by Amy Likar is reinforcing our commitment to helping flutists of all ages and skill levels to achieve their fullest musical potential," said Sarah Hollandsworth, Director of Marketing & Sales for FluteWorld. "Flute playing is a physical activity potentially exposing players to painful overuse injuries. Wellness resources such as this workshop create awareness, helping our community pursue their passion in a holistic fashion and continue to grow as artists."
