Local Scout Gives Exceptional Children the Tools They Need to Focus at School
16 year-old boy raises money to help kids in local school district. Kennnedy, who is on the Autism spectrum, raised money and supplied the exceptional children in his school district with a tool to help them focus.
Florence, SC - Kellen Kennedy, age 16, a Life Scout at Troop 476 in Florence, S.C., led a successful fundraising effort to bring the KINNEBAR Foot Swing, a tool that provides movement and sensory input to children, to other exceptional children in his local school district. By reaching out to the company that built the KINNEBAR and sharing his story of benefitting from their product, Kennedy was able to increase his impact on his local community.
When it came time for Kennedy to design his Eagle Project, he wanted to find a way to make an impact on his local community, and on kids like himself. Last year Kennedy, who is on the Autism Spectrum, purchased a KINNEBAR Foot Swing to help him focus while doing schoolwork. The KINNEBAR helps children who seek movement or sensory input -- especially those with ADHD, Autism, and Sensory Processing Disorder. Having found success with the foot swing, he was inspired to use his Eagle Project to provide KINNEBARS to classrooms around Florence.
Kennedy set a goal of raising funds to purchase 12 KINNEBARS and dove into the project. As he kicked off his fundraising efforts, his business instincts led him to reach out to Jodi Whalen, the owner of Mindful Mission, the North Carolina company that makes KINNEBAR. Explaining the motivation behind his Eagle Project, Kennedy told Whalen,
"I feel that these swings will greatly benefit exceptional students in our local school district here in Florence." After sharing his personal story with KINNEBAR, Kennedy asked a savvy question: Were there any discounts for buying in bulk? Whalen was so impressed with his enthusiasm and his mission to help his school district that she committed to helping him reach his goal. Whalen said, "I thought it was a great idea for his scout project and I loved that he was motivated by his own experience with our product. When this impressive young man asked us to help him achieve his goal, gosh, I didn't have to think twice about offering Kellen a discount! Being a small business owner can be hard work, but moments like these motivate me to continue striving to help children."
